Volvo Yacht Racing!!!

Last Wednesday when we arrived at school it was still cold and dark. We were off on an adventure to see the Volvo Ocean Racing yachts at the Viaduct, in Auckland.

After a long, noisy bus trip we were greeted by our friendly tour guide. We then went to have our photo taken by the whale tail in front of the Maritime Museum. Luis de Dios and Xandi Kreuzeder that created the whale tail are well known for recycling rubbish from the ocean and using it to create pieces of art. We were lucky enough to see some of their master pieces. These included the flip flop fish that was made from lots of different kinds of jandals and flippers, as well as the tuna fish was made of old tuna cans.

Straight after that we had the opportunity to choice to go sailing on either one of Sir Peter Blake's yachts or Tri Luder yachts. We felt that we were lucky to be able to participate in such an exciting experience.

Some of the other highlights of our trip were the 3D movie about the history of the Volvo Ocean Race, the simulator ride, the movie about the albatross and saving the ocean, visiting the village and exploring the museum.

We were exhausted, but very thankful that we got to visit the Volvo Ocean yachts. It was a great opportunity for the year 5 and 6 students of Morningside School to experience.

Horse Riding

Today I went horse riding with my brother Eli. The horses came out of  the stable and waited quietly in the shed. Then we went into the shed. I hopped onto a brown horse named Angel. She was very friendly! My favourite activity was shooting hoops. We had these rubber balls that could do little bounces. We had to try to throw the ball into the hoop while we were on the horse.

3D SHAPES WITH GRAPES

We have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties. On Friday we worked in teams to create 3D shapes with grapes, kebab sticks and tooth picks. Some of the shapes we explored included cubes, cuboids, cones, triangular prisms, triangular based pyramids, square based pyramids, cylinders and spheres. In our groups we discussed and then recorded how many edges, faces and vertices each shape had. Then we used the digital cameras to capture different 3D shapes in our school environment. Check out some of our photos. :)

Our Camp Adventure

Wayne yells, "water slide open!" We all rush to be the first in line. This is how our camp adventure begins. We arrived at Marsden Bay Christian Camp on the 22nd Feb. After a walk around the camp we were allowed to explore our bunk rooms. Some of us even got to sleep in a double bed. This would be our home for the next two nights. We were put into Hogwart's house groups and had to earn points for our team. For dinner we had Mc Donalds and Pizza Hut the next night. Just kidding!! Our favourite dinner was hamburgers and wedges. They were delicious!! After dinner we played spot light and ate marshmallows around the camp fire. We also sang some songs while Barry played the guitar. The winning Hogwart's house was Ravenclaw. Everyone got a golden snitch and a certificate. Some of our favourite camp memories include the talent quest, the flying fox, kayaking, cage soccer, the water slide, the adventure course, exploring Waipu Caves, archery, swimming at the beach in the rain, the water fight, volleyball and eating ice cream for breakfast! We would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents who helped out with our Morningside School camp.
